New Mexico
Ken and Dario speed by on my left without a word, locked in ‘the zone’ single-file, chasing Gary down. They’re probably aggravated about the fast pace. Jeff doesn’t seem to mind and pulls up alongside me. The only time I saw Jeff hit the wall, or bonk, came much later in Salt Plains. “Fo-ley,” he’s laughing, “You blow a gasket?”
New Mexico remains much as it was when the Spanish first arrived. They brought with them the horse. From this point forward, the lives of the Pueblo, Navajo and Apache Indians who lived in this area were forever changed. Riding the two lane road down off the dry plateaus scattered with high desert scrub, it’s easy to imagine a lone rider on horseback or a small nomadic tribe slowly making their way across the uneven country.
